River House and its successor,New River House, were the family homes of Samuel South(2) from 1917 until his death in 1956. The houses were built on the brow of Devonshire Hill Lane (formerly Clay Hill), North Tottenham, and took their names from the Tottenham loop of the New River (abandoned in 1852) which ran through the grounds of River House. The south elevation provided a panoramic view of North London.

Nos. 1-13 River House was a rambling building with a, formerly separate, cottage comprising the west wing. In the late 1920s the wing was demolished and an extension added to the east end of the main house. The property was demolished in 1937 with the exception of the extension which remains as 133, Devonshire Hill Lane.

Nos 14-17 New River House, 139 Devonshire Hill Lane, N 17, was built in 1937 replacing River House with a smaller. more manageable, property.
